Owen Wilson In Talks For ‘Inherent Vice'

We did not see this one coming. According to The Wrap (who are now definitely on a roll breaking casting stories), Owen Wilson is in talks for an unspecified role for "Inherent Vice." Like Del Toro, O'Connor and even Phoenix for that matter, nothing is confirmed yet. Though its likely all the key roles have been locked for weeks, none have been announced in any kind of official capacity. The Wrap does indicate Wilson's role is one of the leads, so who do you think Wilson might be playing?

Update 9:10pm: We have spoken with a source close to production who informs us that Wilson will be playing the character of Coy Harlingen, a surf-saxophone player for a band called The Boards. In the book, Coy was rumored to be dead of a heroin over-dose but is indeed a central character that appears throughout the entire story.

Wilson (a screenwriter himself on Wes Anderson's first 3 films) went on record circa 2006 to express his admiration for PTA saying, “I loved Punch-Drunk Love. It revved me up to write something. It’s a simple story but it proves it’s all in the details.” Is he the first actor since Gwyneth Paltrow to appear in both a Paul Thomas Anderson and Wes Anderson film? Filming on 'Vice' is set to get underway later this month so there should be lots more casting announcements to come. And if you're involved with the production, why don't you drop us a line?

Stay tuned to Twitter and Facebook for the latest news and updates.
"The Master" is now available on Blu-ray and DVD.

  3. Could definitely be Coy Harlington. I like Owen Wilson as a comedic actor and I'll be curious to see what PTA can get out of him.

  5. WOW- this is amazing news!
Owen Wilson is awesome. Everyone mentions the Wes Anderson connection, but his best roll is in Woody Allen's "Midnight in Paris". Coy is the more likely fit, though Denis wouldn't be far off.

  6. Owen Wilson playing a heroin addict? Not much of a stretch.

  7. I came across a blog post from a few years back talking of casting choices s/he would like and person referred to Denis as "Cheech to Doc’s Chong". Would that fit?

  8. Hey, look, Owen was at the party with Phoenix, Vince Vaughn and Robert Pattinson! This suggests something.

  9. Wilson playing Coy has me thinking. If Pattinson is going to be in this, I kinda could see him playing Denis. It would certainly be an interesting choice, and would be kinda hilarious to see.

  11. This is very interesting.. I'm very curious to see how a colaboration between Owen Wilson and Paul Thomas Anderson works out

  12. Seymour Cassell appeared for both directors more recently than Gwyneth Paltrow. He played Rocky in Boogie Nights, a non-speaking role if I recall. He is most prominently seen in the limo scene as the camerman.

He also played Max's dad in Rushmore and Rusty the doorman in Royal Tenenbaums.

    1. amazing. I found myself youtube-ing songs while reading the novel; alot of awesome tunes.
It will be interesting to see how PTA incorporates all the songs from the novel into the picture, as his last 3 films have heavily featured composed scores as opposed to soundtracks

    2. Someone actually put together a playlist for it on Spotify for anyone that uses it. Just search Inherent Vice.

      Delete
    3. Purely a hunch but I think PTA is going to use a lot of his own soundtrack selections alongside some of the ones Pynchon includes.

    4. No Frank Zappa & The Mothers Of Invention ??

  14. I find the whole soundtrack thing really interesting, because Inherent Vice the book actually ends with a song that played a prominent role in Boogie Nights. It'll be an interesting call back if PTA goes with it.

    2. If that's true I think it's a great choice, especially if it's the character I'm thinking of. And I know a lot of people have been iffy on Dunst, but I think she proved herself with her great performance in Melancholia.

    3. also don't be surprised in the next days when jim carrey will be confirmed

    4. I can completely see Dunst as Shasta.

    5. Makes complete sense! He's a fan, he recommended her to Lars for Melancholia. :)

    1. LMAO! if Bill Murray had a cameo, as say Crocker Fenway, that would be unrealll

  18. I'd love for PTA to incorporate Pynchon's soundtrack selection AND to re-team with Greenwood.

One or the other may be the ultimate choice.

    Anonymous,

I actually think Witherspoon would be a perfect Shasta. The character is a washed up actress (not suggest RW is washed up) who used to have a wholesome type of personality. She's the right age. I think her or Gwenyth Paltrow would be good.

If Kirsten Dunst is in INHERENT VICE it's a new decision, because she was in NYC up until late last week and arrived in LA yesterday or the day before. Meaning she hasn't been testing for it. Also, she's in LA to shoot a cameo for ANCHORMAN 2.

So I seriously doubt she's been given the part. But it's likely that PTA will cast the part this week and is meeting with actresses for it and Kirsten is one of the actresses he will meet with.

    1. She shot Anchorman 2 in Atlanta, not LA, and the theory that PTA casting the part this week is based on nothing.

I base it on her appearances. She's in NYC, she's in Atlanta, she's in LA for two days and now she's in France. It doesn't sound like she's in a movie that is gearing up for production.

  21. Everytime PTA finishes a film, he is asked in interviews who he would like to work with next.

After Magnolia, he said he wanted to work with Adam Sandler.

After Punch Drunk Love he said he wanted to work with Daniel Day Lewis.

After There Will Be Blood he said he wanted to work with Phillip Seymour Hoffman again.

AFTER THE MASTER, he said De Niro, Jim Carrey, Charlize Theron (who WAS cast but had to drop out) Michael Shannon and ...i think... Michelle Williams.

I bet we get parts for most of the above. Wouldnt it be great if De Niro was in it? Fuck.

Kirsten Dunst has now left LA and gone to Cannes. I don't think she's in it. It seems she was only in LA at all to do a cameo in Anchorman 2.

I know it hasn't started, but my guess is he is casting this week. Hard to get a part in California when you're in France for the next two weeks.
